Read document #4, "The Movement" by Anne Moody.
PROMPT:
You are a member of the Sit-in Movement in Mississippi and you have been spit on, struck and assaulted for simply sitting at the lunch counter. How did you feel while planning these events knowing the violence you would face? How did you remain peaceful? Is it worth it? What are your reactions?
Sit-ins are an effective method of combating public discrimination. It brings attention to the cause, which is the most successful result of nonviolent protests. Nobody was killed for sit-ins and this made it more effective than public marches and other forms of protests where many were killed.
ReplyDeleteI feel great! Even though people are discriminating on me I feel like I am doing something good for a good cause. I am using non-violence just like MLK and Ghandi. I am also being a martyr just like so many people before me. I thought about reacting but then I would die and I didn't sit down to die. So many people had done sit-ins before and they didn't die. It is worth it to do sit-ins because even though you get discriminated on you are being a Martyr and that is what so many people wanted the Blacks to be. My first reaction was "kill them!". Now my reaction is "who cares as long as I am helping out a cause!"
ReplyDeletei would feel disgusting but i know that i am doing it for the right cause and i am not hurting anyone. hopefully the people using violence and spitting on us will feel a tremendous amount of guilt and will face consequences for their actiond.
ReplyDeleteI dont know why they are discriminating against me. They want blacks to be martyrs. I felt like i waas going to die but i had faith.
ReplyDeletePersonally, i don't think i would've been able to do it. It is such a violent reaction that people had, its ridiculous. Even tough I have faith in God...it would be very hard for me to remain calm especially after seeing the man with the knife coming to attack us. I would not mind being bathed in ketchup, mustard, etc. But i think the fear was great in those situations. Especially knowing that you could be brutally beaten or maybe even killed.
ReplyDeleteI'd feel troubled knowning what would happen if I participated in the sit-in. Anyone who could do that to another person just because of their race is wrong. I do think sit-ins are a good thing. It's a good way not to use violence, but very effective when proving of point. I would remain peaceful. I'd be standing up for what I believe in.
ReplyDeletei feel good because I am part of a group that is doing all the posible to eliminate the didcrimination. I am supporting the idea of fight again people who think that Afriacan-American are differents of other just because the color.

My feelings toward planing this event is that it needs to be done and we the people will do it no matter what the consequences are, are voices need to be heard. We remaind peaceful because we have been threw harder times and we knew that there can only be better ones ahead. This sit in was worth it 110% no matter what people have to say about it showed that we want change and we do not give in to anything.
ReplyDeleteI think that these kind of events need to be planned carefully to try and prevent severe physical harm, being spat on and struck is painful and embarrassing but it get attention for the cause. as long as no one is seriously hurt and the sit-ins get the publics attention then they can be considered a success. It is hard sometimes not to use violence back but we all just have to think about how using violence would just ruin the effort put in to make our point
ReplyDeletethese events needed to be planned and just because people were not happy with it does mean they should be violent about. staying peaceful is the only way to not cause more trouble. the sit in was definately worth the trouble though because points were made.
