As you read about in Chapter 29.2, not everyone supported integration in schools. Read document #3, the excerpt from Gov. Ross Barnett's speech, and respond to this prompt as a person who was experiencing the civil rights movement firsthand.
PROMPT:
You have just watched the Governor’s speech justifying his refusal to allow James Meredith to attend Ole Miss (the
My reaction to the Governor's speech is in shock.Yeah, James Meredith might have been black, but still, what happened to separate but equal? Everyone should have the chance to learn equally, to go to the same school, to learn the same things. The Federal government should back up James Meredith, because all he wants is to go to school and get a diploma.
ReplyDeleteI think it is unreasonable that people would want to withhold education from any of this country's children who is eager to learn. This is not a state decesion but should be a country decesion to let this gentlemen who has served our country in war, beomc educated like the rest of us Americans. To stop this young man from being admitted to this university. It should be unconstitutional!

ReplyDeleteI agree with MJ and Aline. I think that everything that he said is wrong. Integration is the right thing to do. Blacks and whites should not be separated because once the federal government ruled "separate but equal" in the Supreme Court but separate isn't equal. Whites have more privledges than Blacks. I think that this is a federal government issue and not a state issue. I think that the federal government should give a punishment to all perpetrators of the law. It is the law and if you don't want to obey the law then you should be locked away for good.
ReplyDeletei think the u.s. government was rediculous during the whole civil rights period because they made some very intersesting decisions. i cant believe they would not let a human being attend a school because of the skin color. james meredith was just a regular person that wanted to advance his skills in life and education. blacks and whites should never have been seen as seperates
ReplyDeleteGoverment does not want James Meredith to go to the University of Mississippi just because he is black. That is not fair!
ReplyDeleteTO be honest i did not understand the speech 100% but I found it ironic on how he dedicated a whole paragraph in his speech to talk about 'principles' something that in my opinion he did not have. He is also an ignorant man because to my point of view...racism is pure ignorance. And he thinks that what the Federal government dictates is unlawful, when not letting James Meredith attend college is unlawful, everybody has the right to education if so they want to.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Evadne when she says "racism is pure ignorance." You can tell just by the way this speech was written he is being ignorant. The fact that he would rather close down schools then make them intergrated is ridiculous. Everyone needs an eduaction reguardless of skin color. He needs to fix his beliefs.
ReplyDeletethe governor is not fair with their citizens.the education is important for everyone i can't believe that he said those words against the million of African-American that want go to school.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this i could tell that the governor was a very racist and wanted segregation to stand in the state of mississippi no matter what the laws were. The Govner is just a rotten piece of scum. James Meredith should been allowed to go.
ReplyDeleteI think it's really unfair of the governor to discriminate against James Meredith. He is the Governor of a sate and is supposed to be a role model and by discriminating based on skin color sets a bad example for anyone that listens to him. i think the federal government should have taken him out of office and make sure that he could safely attend school.

James meredith just wanted to be able to be like a white and go to school. he did not wanted to be discriminated anymore. the govenor was wrong to discriminate him. he should not set a bad example for his community.
